The user is expected to have a general knowledge of microscopy. We shall be pleased to supply our publication “The Microscope and its-Application“ on request.Introduction The Leitz microfiash device is a small. power- ful electronic flash unit for the photography of dynamic processes under the microscope. Electronic flash photomicrography in trans- mitted light is used in: Biology: study of the movement of unicellu- lar subjects and ciliated epithelia. Medicine: bacteriology. parasitology. and in- travital microscopy. Chemistry and mineralogy: Crystallization. melting and solution processes. colour reac- tions. Electronic flash photomicrography is also used when owing to vibration at the work- place sharp pictures cannot be obtained with conventional methods. The flash duration is ‘lmo sec. This ensures perfect contour sharp- ness even where the event is very rapid. The colour temperature of the flash is 6000°/K which corresponds to the colour characte- ristics of daylight colour films and eliminates the need for filters. if artificial-light colour films are used. the appropriate conversion filter is necessary. The light intensity of the flashes is constant. but the combinations of the optical compo- nents. methods of illumination. and the film speed are variables. In addition. the light transmission also differs from specimen to specimen. The correct exposure is therefore achieved by accurately reducing the light intensity through the insertion of grey filters of different transmission. The main field to which electronic-flash photomicrography is applied is the produc- tion of series pictures on 35mm film.
